smiles-smJuly 26, 2010 – It has been one of those weeks where so much has happened and all of it has me in a great mood. From launching a new client website to  new things happening around the  farm and with the horses to winning an award… it’s been a week of feel good emotions (or maybe it is just the lack of sleep from yet another early horse show morning). And, how can you not smile when you see kids having such a great time with their horse (Belle makes a great backscratcher :-) ) Read the rest of this entry »

Writing this blog, as most of you know, is my way of sharing what is happening around our farm and in our horsie lives with others who can absolutely relate. I love to write and with so many great horses and friends & family members in my life, what better subject is there to write about? I am very open about what is happening around here, whether good or bad, and I imagine that is what makes this blog so successful and why people feel like they are here with us when they are reading Diary (or sometimes referred to as ramblings) of a Horse Mom. I also like to share other helpful articles and blog posts that would be beneficial to my readers. It is all a labour of love and I am just happy that I people are actually reading and enjoying it!

2010 Top 45 Diaries Blog Award Winner Well, imagine my surprise today when I got back from a nice lunch with hubby (thanks dear  :-) ) and read my emails to find one that is informing me that I won a 2010 Top 45 Diaries Blog Award. Woohoo! So excited and appreciative to Awarding the Web for this awesome recognition and honour! I am humbled and giddy :-)

And thank you to my readers for the nomination! You rock!

In recent years, Americans have become increasingly concerned about where their meat comes from, how it is raised, and how the animals are treated by farmers. Films like Food, Inc. have made many Americans think more carefully about the food they choose to feed their families. Parents are concerned about everything from antibiotics in chicken to hormones in beef to tainted animal feed linked to Mad Cow.

But many Americans don’t realize that many farmers actually treat their animals very well. Think about it: if a farmer doesn’t take care of his livestock, he loses money. So it’s only natural that smart farmers choose to treat their herds and flocks to the best possible food. Here are some of the ways that farmers preserve the health of their animals…just by feeding them properly.

SAM_0457-smJuly 19, 2010 – Howdy everyone… how’s your summer going so far? We are having a pretty good summer here at Shady Ridge. The weather was pretty darn hot again this past week and only a little bit of rain. Some places in Southern Ontario got lots of rain and some pretty wild storms but they all seem to be detouring around us. The clouds are producing some beautiful sunsets(and you know how much I love a good sunset)  but we could really use some rain! We are having the type of summer that we haven’t seen in a number of years with a lot of heat and fairly dry. A lot of people have been wishing for this type of weather but me… not so much :-) Read the rest of this entry »

Alyssa-Aullie-smJuly 12, 2010 – First… I’m so sorry for not getting an update out last week. I’ve had a number of  subscribers ask me how come I didn’t do a post last week. In truth, I just didn’t feel like it…LOL  I was wiped out after spending a hot day over at Teen Ranch watching Alyssa and her new horse Aullie (they rocked it, btw :-) ) and then coming home to laundry, grocery shopping, outside work, etc. so I just was in one of those moods where all I wanted to do was play a game on my computer while I vegged in front of the TV. So, my sincere apologies to everyone for not getting an update done. I will try not to let that happen again but I can’t promise, especially during the summer, as we always have so much on the go. And congrats to Alyssa on a great showing with Aullie! Read the rest of this entry »

Megan-Harley-smJune 28, 2010 -  It seems that I am not keeping up to my schedule of having my blog updates done each Sunday evening. Good intentions, huh? But then life seems to get in the way and those good intentions fly right out the window. You all know how I feel this time of year… right horse people? :-) Weekends are all about horse shows and weekdays, thrown in amongst our day to day jobs, is all about getting ready for them. June 22, 2010 – Summer has finally arrived but the summer weather, and summer plans, started long before the official season formally arrived. It was wonderful weather, for the most part, last week which has given the girls and horses an opportunity to get in some more in-the-saddle time. They didn’t get off the property last week (they… being the horses, that is) but they each had a good amount of time here to do some work (in between rainy episodes). Read the rest of this entry »

June 14, 2010 – Can you believe that the kids only have about 1 week of school left before they are off for the summer? Megan has this week of classes  and then next week has her exams. After that, she will be home for 2 months… 2 months of “drive me here”, “I’m bored”, and “can my friends sleep over”. But it will also give her the opportunity to work more with Charlie and perfect his love of jumping. Read the rest of this entry »

IMG_2080-smJune 7, 2010 – It has been a really hot spring here in southern Ontario but last week we finally got some rain and the grass and plants are loving it.  I am not so sure that the horses like it. There are no bugs biting them when it’s raining but do they like to stand out there with the rain soaking them? I imagine that when the temperatures are high, they welcome the rain but what about other times? To me, they just don’t look like they are enjoying it. Read the rest of this entry »

June 1, 2010 – Phew… what a hot week it was around here last week! It was one of those kinds of weeks when you walk out the door and wham!… a wall of heat hits ya. Yuck! We usually have nice temperatures in May but this past week we even had heat alerts… it was sweltering. Is this a sign of things to come? Is this summer going to be a scorcher? I hope not and imagine the horses hope it isn’t either… the poor things were sweating just standing in the paddock. Read the rest of this entry »
